Program Description

This is an interdepartmental program designed to provide students with an integrated, balanced perspective of Latin America. In order to earn a bachelor of arts degree students must complete 36 semester hours of classes with a Latin American focus drawn primarily from the social sciences. Two years of college-level Spanish or Portuguese is required. A 27-credit minor is also offered. The Latin American Studies program in conjunction with the Department of Foreign Languages operates a one semester academic program in Latin America.

Up to 6 credits of seminar/topics/problems/field study or new courses in various departments which have a substantial Latin American content also may be used with the permission of the advisor.

Students who have participated in SCSU's Latin America program may use a maximum of 9 credits of non-Spanish language courses and 3 credits of course completed in Latin America toward the major.

Notes

Language Competency: Completion of a year of 200 level course work or the equivalent in Spanish or Portuguese.
